In North America, black wolves have inherited the allele responsible for melanism, which comes from crossbreeding with dogs at least 15,000 years ago.
“Black” specimens are more common in North America than in Eurasia and more specifically in western Canada and the United States. Half of the wolves in Yellowstone National Park are black.
But in fact; the black wolf is a grey wolf with a black coat!
